Mobile app design: For startups shipping an app

For startups shipping a mobile app, or a web product that has to work on a phone: what the app does on its first screen, how people get through sign-up and verification, and how the same design system carries the app and the web. On Equi I designed the mobile app of a digital family office from zero, including its onboarding, fund views and widgets.

Format
Flow by flow, or as fractional work
Price
Per flow, quoted after an audit; fractional from $8,000 a month
Proof
Equi, TrueFi
Output
Screens with every state, on a design system shared with the web

What I design

  • The first screen and the reason to open the app again.
  • Sign-up, verification and onboarding on a small screen.
  • Navigation that holds as features are added.
  • Widgets and notifications that are worth having.
  • One design system for the app and the web, so the two do not drift apart.

Where the experience comes from

ProductWhat I designedMeasured
EquiThe mobile app of a digital family office: onboarding, fund overview, widgets, on one component libraryOnboarding time dropped by 40%; the team estimated frontend work about 25% faster with one library
TrueFiCore lending, staking and governance features across web and mobileNo published measure of the design work

Measured by the teams, not by me, and reported to me by the people who ran the numbers. Each compares with the version before the change: Deva’s in its beta, Equi’s while I was on the team, 2021-2022. My part in each is on the case page.

Equi mobile app: a real estate fund’s detail screen with fund details, target locations and property typesEqui mobile home screen: the growth fund balance with Fund and Withdraw buttons above a chart
Equi’s mobile app: a fund’s detail screen, and the home screen with the balance and what you can do with it.

How it runs

  • Start. A short audit of the app, or a Product Diagnosis when the question is what to build.
  • Flows. Each flow designed end to end with its states, each priced after the audit.
  • System. Components shared with the web, described for engineers and their coding agents.
  • Or month by month as fractional product design.

Questions founders ask

How much does mobile app design cost?

A price per flow, quoted after a short audit, or from $8,000 a month as fractional work.

Do you design for iOS and Android?

Yes. One design system, with each platform’s conventions where they matter to the user.

Do you build the app too?

I build web front ends myself. For a native app I work with your mobile engineers, or the first version can be a web app: see design and build.

Can you work on the app we already have?

Yes. It starts with a short audit of the app as it is, then the flows that need it.

Will the design be ready for Flutter or React Native?

Yes. The components and states are specified for the framework your team uses, and building it in Flutter or React Native is possible too, by agreement.

Do you design App Store screenshots and app icons?

Yes.

Do you work with teams in other countries?

Yes. I work remotely, with teams in different countries and time zones.
