Fractional or full-time product designer: When each one makes sense
Hire a full-time product designer when there is design work every day and someone to lead it. Bring in a fractional one when the work is real but not daily, when you need senior judgment before you can justify a senior salary, or when a first version or a relaunch needs an owner for a few months. On independent designers’ published prices, part-time senior work costs $4,000 to $8,000 a month; one designer’s comparison estimates a full-time senior product designer in the US at $14,000 to $19,000 a month, and about three months to hire. The two buy different things, so the sums alone do not decide it.
Signs you need a fractional designer
- A first version has to be defined, and nobody on the team has done it before.
- The product works but has become hard to use and hard to change.
- You are about to raise or launch, and the product has to look like the company it says it is.
- Engineers ship every week, partly with coding agents, and nobody owns how the product behaves.
- You need a senior person now, and a senior hire would take months to find.
Signs you need a full-time designer
- There is design work every day, across several teams or products.
- Research, design and the design system all need an owner at once.
- Someone on the team can lead a designer, or the hire will lead others.
- The product will be the company’s core for years, and the knowledge has to stay inside.
What each costs, and how fast it starts
| Option | Cost a month | Before work starts |
|---|---|---|
| Fractional, part-time senior | $4,000 to $8,000 on published prices | Days, once the scope is agreed |
| Full-time senior product designer, US | $14,000 to $19,000, by one designer’s estimate | About three months to hire, by the same estimate |
| Design agency | $15,000 to $40,000, by the same comparison | Three to six weeks |

What you give up with each
- Fractional: fewer hours, so usually one stream of work at a time; less time in the team’s daily conversations; and what the designer learns leaves with them unless it is written down.
- Full-time: months to hire, a salary whether or not the work fills the week, and someone to manage. In return, every day of attention, several streams at once, and knowledge that stays in the company.
What a fractional designer should own
Not tickets. The product side: what goes into the next release and what waits, how the system behaves behind the screens, and what it looks like. If the person only takes requests, you are paying senior rates for production work.
- A seat in planning, and a say in scope.
- Access to the repository, so they can read what ships and, if they write code, fix it.
- One design system, kept in code, that engineers and their coding agents build from.
- A fixed number of days a week, agreed at the start and adjusted month to month.
How to make it work
- Start with a small, fixed piece of work, like a one-week Product Diagnosis, so both sides know what the work is before committing to months.
- Give one founder the job of deciding with the designer, so decisions do not wait for a meeting.
- Review what shipped every week, not what was designed.
- Write down what the designer owns and what they do not, so nothing falls between them and the engineers.
When to switch to full-time
When the fractional days are always full and the backlog keeps growing, or when the design work splits into several streams. A good fractional designer helps you write the job description and hire for it.
Questions founders ask
Is a fractional product designer cheaper than a full-time hire?
Per month, often: $4,000 to $8,000 for part-time senior work against $14,000 to $19,000 for a full-time senior designer in the US, by one designer’s estimate. But a full-time designer is there every day and what they learn stays with you, so compare what each would own.
How many days a week does a fractional designer work?
Whatever the stage needs: agreed at the start, adjusted month to month.
Can a fractional designer lead design for the company?
Yes, for a small team: decide, design and set the system. Once there are several designers to lead, hire a full-time lead.
What does fractional product design cost with you?
From $8,000 a month. See fractional product design.
